February 12, 2020. A really good way to lose your job. “Iran’s information minister apologized Wednesday for posting a photo on Twitter of what appeared to be a Halloween-type costume representing a spacesuit, in an effort to promote the idea of a manned space program for his country. The official IRNA news agency quoted Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi, Iran’s information and communications technology minister, as saying his department’s advertising team “undeniably made a mistake in choosing the image” and expressed his apologies to “the people and space scientists” of Iran. [He didn’t even take personal responsibility but blamed the team]. The photo, posted on Jahromi’s Twitter account and depicting what looks like costume of a spacesuit with an Iranian flag sowed on the front, caused a stir on social media, with many Iranians turning to sarcasm and commenting about the fake spacesuit. After his apology, Jahromi removed the photo from his account. The timing of the minister’s faux pas was also unfortunate. An Iranian rocket failed to put a satellite into orbit on Sunday, the latest setback for a program the U.S. claims helps Tehran advance its ballistic missile program. The attempted launch followed two failed launches last year, of the Payam and Doosti satellites, as well as a launchpad rocket explosion in August. Also, a fire at the Imam Khomeini Space Center in February 2019 killed three researchers, authorities said at the time. Jahromi acknowledged the unsuccessful launch in a tweet shortly after the news broke on state TV, comparing it to a “few samples of US launch failures” and insisting that Iran’s space program was unstoppable. The failed launch had been planned amid celebrations ahead of this week’s anniversary of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. Incredible reporting by Frantzman reveals what most of the press doesn’t cover—the sudden additional pressures on Hezbollah due to the removal of Qasem Soleimani from heading Iran’s terror efforts. It is so significant to anti-terrorism efforts by multiple countries and to eventual peace that the linchpin of Iran’s foreign policy use of terrorism was removed from the long war against terrorism. February 9, 2020. Don’t protest in Iran. “Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) agents arrested a teachers’ representative at his home in Iran on February 8. Mohammad Taqi Fallahi is the secretary of the Iranian Teachers’ Trade Association, an independent entity which campaigns for higher salaries, better work conditions and improvement of schools in Iran. IRGC agents also confiscated some of Fallahi’s personal items during the arrest, including his telephone, computer case and a hard disk. Agents told his family to remain silent and not talk to any media. Mr. Fallahi was arrested last May, along with other activist teachers, when they protested outside parliament against low teacher salaries. He was released six days later after posting bail and later received a suspended eight-month prison sentence and ten lashes. Intelligence agencies and Iran’s hardliner Judiciary have harassed, detained and convicted many activist teachers in recent years. Salaries of school teachers are among one of the lowest for government employees, close to the minimum wage of about $110 a month. Recently, labor groups petitioned the government to increase the minimum wage, arguing that expenses for food and basic necessities for a family of four is $660 per month. Teachers have also demanded improvement of school buildings as the government invests little in the upkeep of infrastructure in general. Many school buildings are in dilapidated condition, especially in rural regions.” See the story at “Iran's Revolutionary Guards Arrest Teacher Activist At His Home,” Radio Farda, February 9, 2020.

hostage, forcing Canada to announce its indignation as this story shows. “Canada will press Iran on Wednesday to send
the black boxes from a downed airliner immediately to France where the data can
be analyzed, Foreign Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne told reporters. Iran’s civil aviation authority said on
Tuesday it would keep working with other countries investigating its downing of
a Ukrainian passenger plane last month. Tehran has not released the black
boxes. Champagne said he would be
talking to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif about the recorders,
the probe and compensation for families of the 57 Canadians who were among the
176 people aboard who were killed. “We
are going to ask that the black boxes be sent to France ... (which) has all the
equipment and technical expertise to analyze them,” said Champagne. “We don’t
want there to be any more delays so we would like to see that happen
immediately.” Champagne said he and
Canadian Transport Minister Marc Garneau met the head of the International
Civil Aviation Organization last Friday to ask for its help to make sure the
flight and cockpit recorders were sent to France. “This is a message I will reiterate (to
Zarif) ... we judge Iran by their actions, not their words,” Champagne said.” See “Canada to press Iran to send downed plane's black boxes to France," Reuters, February 5, 2020.

February 4, 2020. Calling a spade a spade. The IRGC is called out by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change for being a terrorist organization.
See “Report compares Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to Daesh, Al-Qaeda,” Benedict Spence, Arab News, February 4, 2020. The news story says, “Western governments and international
bodies, including the EU, should designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard
Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organization, the London-based Tony Blair
Institute for Global Change said in a report published on Tuesday. The IRGC
acts as an “institutionalized militia,” and uses its vast resources to spread a
“mission of jihad” through an “ideological army” of recruits and proxies, said
the report, titled “Beyond Borders: The Expansionist Ideology of Iran’s Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps.” The IRGC’s interpretation of Islam bears a
“striking” resemblance to the extremist teachings of Sunni groups such as
Al-Qaeda and Daesh, the report added. The institute published its findings on
the back of work to translate training manuals, used and freely distributed by
the IRGC online, into English from Farsi for the first time. Its analysis of
the material uncovered what it called a “formalized system of indoctrination
that seeks to radicalize its recruits with an extremist Islamist ideology.” Tony Blair, former UK prime minister and
executive chairman of the institute, said the international community needs to
recognize the role that the IRGC plays in spreading terrorism and extremism. “The
IRGC is not simply an arm of the state, it is a body dedicated to advancing an
ideology based on an extreme and intolerant distortion of Islam. It is time we
recognized this formally,” he said. “Extremist ideology gives rise to violent
extremism. Defeating it, and calling out those groups and organizations which
promote it, is a vital part of a peaceful and prosperous future for the
region.” The report found that the IRGC’s indoctrination process includes
promoting a universal Shiite Islamist worldview that it said is “violent and
absolutist,” and that “casts both non-Muslims and regime opponents (including
Muslims) as enemies of Islam and calls for armed jihad against them.” The
report said the IRGC exists as a way of life in the way it spreads edicts on
the ideal structure of society, including promoting the subjugation of women. The
report’s author, Kasra Aarabi, said the IRCG’s use of the internet to
radicalize people is something that tech companies in the West have yet to come
to terms with. The IRGC is able to operate “unhindered” by safeguards normally
employed to monitor and restrict propaganda by Salafist-jihadist groups, he
added. Recognizing this, and moving to prevent the IRGC’s dissemination of
material, would be a key component of any strategy by the international
community to combat its extremism, he said. “These internal manuals reveal how
the IRGC operates as an institutionalized militia, with a formal program of
indoctrination that seeks to radicalize its members and proxies in the region
with a violent distortion of Islam,” Aarabi added in the report. “As the new
evidence in our report shows, the IRGC’s Shia extremist ideology has much in
common with Salafi-jihadism and policymakers should therefore treat it with the
same seriousness as Daesh (Daesh) and Al-Qaeda.” Prof. Saeid Golkar, an expert
on the IRGC at the University of Tennessee in the US, said: “Until now, there
has been a void in any tangible evidence put to policymakers about the material
and content distributed by the IRGC to its growing number of recruits.” He
added: “It is clear from the documents analyzed in this report that the IRGC
has a comprehensive and harmful indoctrination system that seeks to radicalize
its members with a violent Islamist ideology that will be hard to reverse
without a concerted effort.”"

2020. "The Spokesman for President Hassan
Rouhani administration has urged Iranians to go to the polls in the upcoming
parliamentary elections to prevent the collapse of the Islamic Republic. Addressing
reporters at a news conference in Tehran on Monday February 3, Ali Rabiei said
"The upcoming election is the most important election in the history of
the Islamic Republic. The only way to resist the collapse of Iran is going to
the polls." This is by far the most radical comment ever made by an
Iranian official about the state of affairs in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Rabiei promised that the government
will do its best to ensure a healthy election. This comes while only two weeks
ago, President Hassan Rouhani said all the candidates who have been allowed to
run belong to the conservative faction. The Guardian Council has disqualified
nearly one third of the current members of the parliament on charges of
"financial and ethical corruption" and reform-minded figures have
complained that there are very few reformist candidates allowed to run for the
Majles in the February 21 elections. This has reduced the choice for voters
mainly to the hardliner candidates, with the consequent lack of incentive for
people hoping for change to go to the polls. Many voters are already
disillusioned with the country's economic conditions and harsh repression of
recent protests. Regardless of
criticisms, the spokesman for the Guardian Council, Abbas Ali Kadhodai said on
Saturday that some 7,000 candidates have been qualified to run. He said 24
candidates will compete for every parliament seat. He added, "More than 50 percent of
those who registered as candidates have been qualified to run for the
Majles." But according to Kayhan newspaper,
during the news conference on Saturday, a reporter from the reformist daily
Etemad questioned the Guardian Council's impartiality and said that all those
qualified come from the same faction. Kadkhodai said: "This is your
opinion and we do not accept that." Following Kadkhodai's defense of the Guardian
Council's performance in the vetting, some of the disqualified candidates,
mainly current MPs have spoken to the press, questioning the Guardian Council's
argument. Ali Motahari, the outspoken MP for Tehran, told reporters that he was
invited to talk with Guardian Council members on Friday about his
disqualification.”

Likewise, see “Ukrainian President Says Compensation Offered By Iran For Shooting Down Airliner Not Enough,” RFE/RL, February 2, 2020. “Zelenskiy said that Ukraine had yet to receive the recorders, and that Tehran had instead suggested that Ukrainian specialists fly to Iran on February 3 to examine the black boxes. "I'm afraid that the Iranians might attract our specialists and then say, 'Let's decipher [the recorders] on the spot,' and then say, 'Why do you need the black boxes now?'" Zelenskiy said. "No, we want to take these boxes [to Ukraine]," he added.”

January 30, 2020. Iran (and Turkey) now find
themselves in the minority in the Middle East when it comes to their support of
the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. In
fact, amid impeachment, a major trade agreement with China, and a major trade
agreement with Canada and Mexico, we shouldn’t lose sight that an amazing thing
just happened—a plan for peace between Israel and a new Palestinian state, and
supported by the countries of the Middle East (not counting Iran and Turkey). These past two weeks have been so surprising
and important, and may harbor a turn from the last ten years of growing world
authoritarianism. For the point about
the other Middle East states not reacting loudly or violently to the
announcement two days ago, see stories such as, “Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, UAE welcome Trump peace plan,” Omri Nahmias, Jerusalem Post, January 29, 2020. Finally,
we’ll see how Iran responds. Based on
the past 40 years, they won’t turn, and won’t release their support of
terrorism. Or at least cut back, yet.

January 30, 2020. For all those persons out there who didn’t
know much about the Quds Force or its real activities (malign), including
ordinary Iran people, here is a great story about how the Regime is finally
lifting the veil on Quds and Soleimani. “Iranian Media Confirm Quds Force Involvement In Foreign Conflicts,” Golnaz Esfandiari, Radio Farda, January 30,
2020. Here is part of the story: “Concerning also are the images being
released by the Supreme Leader’s office, including one in this story, about the
slain Soleimani being embraced after death by Hussein, grandson of Muhammad, in
essence thanking him for his murderous acts and embracing him in the Islamic
heaven. Here is part of the story: “Iran’s hard-line establishment is trying to
ensure through a state propaganda campaign that the foreign operations branch
of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its assassinated commander
are not forgotten. Major General Qasem
Soleimani -- the late commander of the IRGC’s Quds Force -- was targeted and
killed by a U.S. air strike in Baghdad on January 3. Since then, Tehran’s conservative clerics and
hard-line media have been paying tribute to the memory of “Martyr Soleimani,”
as he’s now referred to in Iran. One
apparent part of the campaign is a recent report published by the hard-line,
semiofficial Fars News Agency -- which is affiliated with the IRGC. It details some of the origins and operations
of the once highly secretive Quds Force that Soleimani had commanded from 1998
until his death. The two-part report
focuses on the so-called “fighters without borders,” a term used by Iran’s
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to refer to the elite Quds Force and its work as
the IRGC’s foreign-operations branch. Significantly,
the report outlines the secret involvement of the Quds Force in a series of
foreign conflicts that Tehran previously has been discreet about. Those conflicts include the 1992-1995 war in
Bosnia-Herzegovina, described by Fars as the “first serious battlefield” of the
Quds Force. These also include conflicts
in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, and Syria. Fars reported that the Quds Force has had “an
impact” upon what it called “the axis of resistance” against Israel in
countries that include Yemen. successes,”
said Afshon Ostovar, an assistant professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in
Monterey, California. “In order to make
Soleimani’s legacy meaningful, they have to expose some of what he was involved
in,” Ostovar told RFE/RL. Ostovar
concludes that the Fars report marks “an interesting turn for Iran and the IRGC
because, just five years ago, some of this stuff was not acknowledged at all.” It says the Quds Force countered the Taliban
in Afghanistan during the 1990s and then worked against U.S.-led forces in
Afghanistan after the collapse of the Taliban regime in late 2001. It also claims that in 2008 during a
three-week conflict between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the Quds
Force provided militants from groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad with
“rocket parts” that were smuggled through Sudan and Egypt. The report also includes a rare admission
that the Quds Force, widely credited in Iran with fighting Islamic State extremists, helped Syrian President Bashar
al-Assad suppress street protests against his government. “With the coordination of Quds Force
officials, experts from the [Iranian] police became involved in teaching and
educating Syrian police in how to deal with street riots,” the report said. “Some equipment” also was given to Syrian
police to help control crowds of anti-Assad demonstrators, it says. An online information campaign that boosted
Soleimani’s profile during his life and contributed to his image as an Iranian
national hero has continued since his death.”
